Where the AP story appearing in many papers about a Mercer Human Resources Consulting Survey had headlines such as this one in the Topeka Capital-Journal: Pay raises smallest since '70s . Or to be more blunt, as the Houston Chronicle put it: Companies getting chintzier about pay raises. Not terribly motivating news during the heat of the summer.
